GreenU

Last week's GreenU kickoff was a great success! A number of students came to our Senate meeting to make suggestions to UM Sustainability Coordinator Ian McKeown about how we can make our campus more environmentally friendly and what kinds of activities our campus can participate in to encourage environmental awareness and conservation. Together, the students and Senators were able to come up with a list of solid ideas for our campus.

The GreenU initiative has two parts. The first part concentrates on making the campus more environmentally friendly by putting more recycling bins in the classrooms and around campus, switching to florescent light bulbs, and putting water filters on the drinking fountains. The second part emphasizes awareness activities through partnerships with undergraduate environmental groups. This spring, we will be seeing Water Day, Earth Week, and Recyclemania.

Mr. McKeown and I will be meeting with Dean Stearns and Director of Facilities Dina Ramos in the next week to establish an agenda for these changes.

Be on the lookout for ways to get involved!

Claire Rumler
1L Senator, Section E
